The nature of inquiry learning is essential to get students engaged in the topic, as well as curious and interested in what it is they are learning. By having essentially an investigation to the topic, inquiry learning really coincides with a constructivist classroom. The students are not just sitting there absorbing information being told by the teacher, they are active participants in their learning and seeking out the answers through their inquiry! The LifeSaver project was a fun and interesting way for us to practice inquiry learning. Jaymi Arlot
I think the largest part of the inquiry process in this exercise was the analyses of the data at the end. Because we were in a group we were able to ask a lot more questions and even ask questions about each others analysis, this lead to further inquiry into the data and a better rounded outcome and analysis of the data. Obviously the experiment itself was in inquiry that the class as a whole participated in and shared their data. The overall experiment leads to many more questions and helped show that the data was insufficient to answer certain question.
Doing class activities like the LifeSavers activity makes learning so much more fun for students. To sit in class and learn every step in excel would not keep most students engaged, but by using the inquiry process it gives students a “hands on” activity. The Lifesaver lesson supports the inquiry process because it allowed our group to go step by step using a form of the scientific method to test our hypothesis. It was a fun and interactive example to use with students—is anyone going to forget it? I think that making a lesson relevant to the lives of students is a major part of a teacher’s job; if a student cannot connect somehow does it matter what we are teaching?
The nature of inquiry learning (in my opinion) at least in this case is to involve students and have them work through an orderly way of doing things. It gives them the tools and helps provide the scaffolding necessary to build their learning just a little higher.
The lifesaver lesson supported the inquiry process through experimentation, observation and evaluation. We used scientific methods to analyze the time in which a lifesaver dissolved in one’s mouth. We were able to record data from all students, and form conclusions based on the data we found. It seems that everyone in our class came to the same conclusion: the results were inconclusive, since there was not enough evidence to validate our findings.

This lesson requires people to think about results and draw conclusions. Doing experiments and coming up with your own conclusions is a great learning tool and encourages deep thinking from students. The information gained through this process is likely to stick with them since they had to find out for themselves and weren’t just handed information to memorize. Inquiry learning is great because it can be applied to real life and allow students to relate it to personal circumstances. This again will help them retain the information and have more meaning to them.

The nature of inquiry learning is being able to use all of your senses and to be free to ask questions. Using our sense of taste in this inquiry was great because it really got us hooked and excited about what we were about to do. We started off by brainstorming a variety of questions about lifesavers and came up with many things we wished to find out. After we began the experiment, it was clear that in order to find conclusive data it would be necessary to have a larger sample size and more controlled variables. However, we learned that even one person with an inaccurate data point can skew an entire piece of data. Overall the nature of inquiry is being free to ask as many questions as possible and to never stop asking those questions. There are always new and different ways we can extend an idea once it’s been asked once.
I feel that the process of inquiry is different for each person; what one person may find as sufficient data to form a conclusion, another may see as inconclusive or as posing more questions then it answers. I think that for this reason, grouping younger students in groups is key for them to come to a more thorough and conclusive response. I think that it is also important to vary skill levels or age levels in groups so that a more diverse plethora of knowledge and expectations are brought to the table. As an educator, I feel that too often teachers are quick to want to only see individual work on the student's part (some teachers ar more grade driven than others and this proves to be very important to them), by facilitatiing group or whole class discussions, ideas can be generated that might not otherwise occur to a student. The LifeSaver lesson is good for several reasons. For one thing, candy is something that most children care about, so it makes science fun. Kids are more likely to be enthusiastic and come up with interesting inquiry questions when the subject is something they enjoy. The great thing about inquiry is that it allows the children to guide their own learning. They learn about things that are required by utilizing things that they care about. Inquiry learning gives children good practice at answering their own questions and learning to figure things out for themselves. When they can answer their own questions, they will not be stuck only knowing the things that someone decides to teach them.

It allows the student to go beyond the direct teaching model of facts as facts. It allows the student to ask why something is or is not. Life doesn’t come with a handbook, there are no easy questions and there are no easy answers. Absorbing facts may be good for appearing on Jeopardy, but inquiry learning is a tool that helps a student become a learner for life.

It gives some structure, but lets the students figure out how to come up with a solution for themselves. I really enjoyed the cooperation among group members. Inquiry learning is usually done in groups and working in groups can also enhance the student’s learning experience. This occurs for several reasons. Learning in a group exposes the learner to other group members’ perspectives and thus enables them to investigate concepts or ideas they might not have thought of on their own. Furthermore, group dynamics play into the process and members have to learn not only the concept or topic being addressed but also how to work in that particular group given the mix of personalities and individual strengths and weaknesses. Thus, inquiry learning in a group setting helps students develop social skills as well as attain the concept in a memorable fashion.

The nature of Inquiry based learning is getting the student involved in what you are teaching. The lifesaver activity was a great way to involve students in the activity. For us, creating the excel document and ppt for a purposeful activity was a great way to get us involved in learning how to use the technology. We were all also very involved in the outcome of the study, as we were the ones doing “field research.” And our predictions made us invested in what the results of the study would be. I think the LifeSaver lesson was a great way to involve students in inquiry learning.
I really think that inquiry learning is one of the best ways to learn. I was not here for the lifesaver experiment and lesson, but after hearing about it, I was very intrigued as to the results. Inquiry learning is fun for me and I think students learn better in an environment when they are encouraged to ask questions and continue to think about possibilities. Exploring is important to the learning process and when students are allowed to explore different subjects, they might find other things or questions they are interested in. I hope to use inquiry learning in my classroom. I will encourage my students to use the same kind of process you all used for the lifesaver lesson to explore other subjects.
