I hope to improve student learning in my WebQuest by offering different worksheets, flow charts, and organization tools for students to utilize. I don't want to overwhelm the students, but I also want the students to feel they have all the resources they need to complete their project.
Student learning can be improved by scaffolding in the Webquest for the simple fact that you are providing students with a number of tools and resources to enhance their knowledge of the subject. By including background information, hand outs, worksheets, perhaps podcast, etc., you can give students of all learning styles different ways of understanding the material.
Scaffolding can be a real asset to students as they work on larger products. You can provide a framework for the project that breaks it down in to smaller tasks that the students can work on. This will help to prevent your students from becoming overwhelmed by a large project and not not knowing where to begin. Scaffolding can provide students with the steps they need to follow to feel and be successful.

Without scaffolding, students are likely to be disorganized, confused, and worst of all, uninterested in the subject of the assignment. By giving the students a direction (or a few options), they are able to determine what they want to do with the assignment, and how they can best use their talents to complete the WebQuest. In addition, scaffolding acts as a contingency plan--the structure(s) provided allow for the students to avoid failing because of mistakes encountered along the duration of the assignment. Checkpoints will help guide students toward completion of assignments as well as provide an opportunity for reflection.

In essence, by not having to worry so much about the process they can actually do a better job learning the process.

By using graphic organizers, my students will be able to break down completing a large project into smaller pieces, so that in the end they will see how their project came together from start to finish. Also, by becoming familiar with using graphic organizers, my students might begin to create their own organizational tools to assist them with other projects in the future.

This can eliminate or ease the stress that can occur when students begin big projects. Without scaffolding there are many tasks people could not accomplish. Hopefully a carefully designed series of steps can give all the tools necessary.

I think that the whole webquest structure actually provides a form of scaffolding for students, and actually makes scaffolding easier for teachers to achieve. I am now trying to work out what those scaffolding tools might be for my webquest.

Samples of how their finished product should look will give them a good idea of what their result should be. Step-by-step instructions will allow them to develop expertise in MapQuest, calculate gas mileage, calculate the cost of the trip, graph their data, understand linear functions, and connect gas mileage with rates-of-change. The directions and examples will provide all the scaffolding they need for success.
My plan, at least up to this point in my personal “Webquest”, is to provide students with multiple opportunities to check their work with myself. I am planning on stretching this lesson plan out to the maximum of five days and allowing students most of that time to create their final projects/presentations (workshop). During these days of “workshop”, I will be meeting with many of the students for quick conferences concerning their work. This can offer to act as a checkpoint for them and myself throughout the duration of the project. Not only will I provide continual support but many brainstorming, and progress tracking sheets will be available for the students as a scaffolding tool. Overall, I feel as if scaffolding is just a way to assist students in their own learning process, and in their process of learning how to learn. By providing multiple outlets of scaffolding, the students will be more likely to stay on track with their assignments, stay in control, and ultimately know where their project is going in the long run. -Justin

When teaching history, one of the key goals is to trigger deep, analytical and evaluative thought processes to solve a problem or issue. Scaffolding helps me in this process because allows me to organize those questions so that the students thought process will be guided in the right direction. In other words, I can move my questioning from simple to more complex questions to help stimulate the analytical and evaluative thought process. By using a scaffolding tool, I can not only organize my questions the way that I want, but I can also make sure that my students’ thought process will be guided in the proper direction to reach the desired outcome of the lesson. A scafold is a structure that allows a builder to move his construction higher, and holds the whole together, strengthening the infant structure until it is full built and strong enough to stand on its own. By the same token,, scafolding the WebQuest lesson plan will allow the teacher to build a more compltete understanding, supporting the small ideas as the students works up to the deeper undertsandings that the lesson is really all about. The structure itself may look like several smaller assignments, or steps, but like the builder, as the project comes together the student will be able to see how each step or piece of the whole strengthens the end product.
